Thomas Smith papers : George Washington division, 1785-1912.

The collection consists of typescripts of originals copies of correspondence between Thomas Smith and George Washington concerning various land suits in Carlisle and Bedford, Pennsylvania in which Smith acted as Washington's attorney. The originals were made by Burton Alva Konkle in 1902. There is also correspondence between Charles F. Humrich, the owner of the originals, and W. J. DeRenne in 1911 concerning the dispensation of these papers.

Thomas Smith (1745 – March 31, 1809) was a politician and jurist from Pennsylvania. Smith was born near Cruden, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He attended the University of Edinburgh, and then migrated to the United States, where he settled in Bedford, Pennsylvania on February 9, 1769. He became a deputy surveyor that same year.
